Transmission Replacement: Rebuilt, Remanufactured & Used

At Preferred Transmission Inc., we get asked about the different transmission repair and replacement options available. Should you choose a rebuilt transmission, remanufactured transmission, or used transmission? As you can imagine, there's no one-size-fits-all solution. You need to compare the pros and cons of each to make an informed decision. Our goal is to help you make that decision. Today, we're going to answer the question "what next" when it's time to replace the transmission.

Transmission Repair & Replacement Options

Let's say a simple transmission repair won't cut it, and you don't want to shop around for a new or used car. Perhaps you're invested in your vehicle, or you have a classic car in need of restoration. Your options include:

  • Rebuild the transmission
  • Install a remanufactured transmission
  • Install a used transmission

Below, we'll take a deeper dive into each solution and factors to consider.

Rebuilt Transmissions: You can have your transmission rebuilt or purchase a rebuilt transmission. A rebuilder will replace parts that don't work and are overly worn. Any transmission parts that still work won't be replaced. Since not every part requires replacement, this option is a cost-effective solution. However, you may need to service your transmission sooner than later depending on the remaining parts and their rate of wear.

Pros:

  • Save money

Cons:

  • Unequal wear between parts
  • Warranties tend to not be as long vs remanufactured

At  Preferred Transmission Inc, we rebuild transmissions and install rebuilt transmissions. We're happy to take a look at what you need and discuss if a rebuilt transmission makes sense for your circumstances.

Remanufactured Transmissions: A remanufactured transmission is one that has all its worn parts re-machined or replaced (verses only the parts that don't work). Our auto repair shop features Jasper remanufacutred transmissions (and engines). Jasper is a trusted name in transmission replacement solutions. Their remanufactured transmissions include design updates for common OEM problems, so your transmission can perform more optimally.

Pros

  • Save money vs purchasing new
  • Warranties tend to be longer on average
  • May include design updates for better performance
  • Include re-machined and replaced parts

Cons

  • Could be higher priced than rebuild

If your transmission needs a lot of work or you love the peace of mind that comes with a long warranty, consider installing a remanufactured transmission from Jasper.

Used Transmissions

You also have the option of purchasing a used transmission. However, this solution comes with increased risk depending on where you get it. If you go transmission picking at a salvage yard, for example, you may not have a full picture when it comes to the transmission's condition. If you're unable to tell the state of wear or how long the transmission has been sitting unused, it's a higher risk purchase. You should also factor in the vehicle's history. Was the vehicle in a wreck or damaged in any manner? These are important factors to consider when shopping the used market.

Pros

  • Generally the cheapest option

Cons

  • Unknown wear and history
  • Warranties tend to be nonexistent or short

Even when  this is the most economical solution, a transmission is going to be a higher priced system to replace. If you're spending money on a transmission, we recommend solutions that minimize the chance of running into issues in the near future. Ask about warranties and always choose reputable shops when purchasing a transmission or scheduling a transmission service.
